I’m rucking with my dog this morning and I cannot get over how fucking extraordinary the human body is.
Almost two years ago I left the most toxic situation I have ever been in. At the end of that job, I could barely walk down the street without my body paying for it.
And yet I was still performing.
You can be incredibly functional while your biology is being driven straight into the ground.
You can work. Lead. Make decisions. Take care of everybody. Hit deadlines. Make money. Look completely fine from the outside.
And underneath all of that, your body is getting more and more expensive to run.
Your sleep goes. Your body hurts. You gain weight. You stop recovering from exercise. You’re tired but wired. You don’t want to go anywhere. You don’t want to see anyone.
Your life starts getting smaller.
And because you’re still performing, nobody calls it what it is.
Biological debt.
Instead we split it into twenty different problems.
Fix your sleep. Lose weight. Work out more. Manage your stress. Get more disciplined.
No.
THOSE ARE THE RECEIPTS.
The bill was created upstream.
Your system has been spending more than it can rebuild.
And then we made up this bizarre story that this is just adulthood.
It is not adulthood.
It is a body running without enough margin.
When I left that job, my body did not immediately become some glowing picture of vitality.
It had shit to repair. A lot of it.
It had to fill in the nooks and crannies.
Connective tissue. Muscle. Bone. Hormone production. Nervous system function. Immune function. Glycogen. Micronutrient stores.
Years of wear from running on stress chemistry and asking for output anyway.
And this is where people get recovery completely wrong.
You can be rebuilding for a long time and still not feel like you have extra capacity.
Of course you don’t. The resources are being used. The body is filling holes. Repairing tissue. Restoring reserves. Rebuilding systems that have been operating on borrowed material.
Capacity can be rising while you still don’t have much margin to feel.
That was my body for a long time, these last two years.
I would rest when I needed to rest. Eat when I needed to eat. Not work out when my body clearly did not want another load.
And every single time I came back, I was stronger. My body had finally been given enough resources to do the work it had been trying to do all along.
Then about three months ago, something shifted.
The leg pain I had lived with for years, especially in the last two years in that job, disappeared.
Gone. I feel like I am 15 now.
My sleep became absurdly good. My hair is thicker than it has ever been. My eyelashes are enormous.
But that is not even the part that blows my mind.
I want life again.
I have theatre season tickets. I joined a pickleball league. I’m swimming, rucking, weight training.
I work from beautiful coworking spaces. I want to go places. I want to see people. I want experiences.
That was not there for a long time.
And I never thought of myself as depressed or negative or checked out.
I was alive. I was working. I was building things. My clients were all freaking thriving.
But a huge amount of my biology was occupied with maintaining the basics. There wasn’t much left.
Now there is.
That is the felt difference between biological debt and biological margin.
Margin is not “having more energy.”
It is having enough biological surplus that your entire life can expand.
And the fucking wild thing is that the body was building toward this long before I could fully feel it.
It was repairing. Repleting. Filling in the nooks and crannies. Building capacity underneath me.
Until eventually the repair stopped consuming everything that came in.
And there was something left over.
That is the moment I am standing in now.
Not “I recovered.” Not “I learned to rest.”
My body has resources again.
Enough to perform.
Enough to repair.
And enough left over to actually live.

Some people come to me because they are doing everything right and still running on empty. Others are doing well and want a body that can fully live the life they are building. |
|
|
Either way, the work is the same. We look at how your life is built and what it costs your body to run it, then change the structure so recovery holds and capacity rises. Not a protocol to follow. A higher floor to live on. The work is Vitality Architecture. Private partnerships for individuals, corporate programs for leadership teams. I take on only a few partnerships per year, and most clients stay. |
